Barbershop Harmony Society - Strategic Vision
Date Posted: Fri, 30 Jun 2017
A Message from Marty. (BHS, but don't join BHS, join an Australian Barbershop Chorus affiliated with Barbershop Harmony Australia.)
When I was hired as CEO five years ago, it was with the understanding that two major projects lay ahead. First, we needed to put the business of the Society on a firm footing. Working with our staff and Society Board, we have stabilized our financial situation, expanded our barbershop education and leadership support through Harmony University, multiplied the number of music educators and young people impacted by our outreach efforts, and broadened the reach of our music around the world.

All that work gave our Society breathing space and permission to embark on the second major mission: looking out the window, beyond the barbershop world as it is today, to where it can go in the next few decades.

Today, after more than eighteen months of research, deep thinking, and surveying more than 6,000 Barbershoppers and fellow stakeholders, the Society Board of Directors and staff are ready to unveil the new Strategic Vision for the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Because you are part of our Barbershop Family, please take the time to watch the Strategic Vision video and share it with others. You can access the video and additional information at www.barbershop.org/everyoneinharmony.

Every Barbershopper, every fellow traveller, every person whose life is touched by the power of singing together, is part of this journey. We can’t wait to get started!
Yours in Harmony,

Listen to some acappella
Date Posted: Fri, 13 May 2016
Listen to some acappella
Acaville Radio is a non-profit, and we’re all volunteer-run.
Why’d We Do It?

Why would someone be crazy enough to spend time, effort, and money on starting a nonprofit a cappella radio station? Good question!

We were frustrated. We listen to a lot of a cappella, and one of our bunch even started a college group twenty years ago (now long gone). But we couldn’t find it well-executed on the web.

There were a few options that came and went over the years. Some had a narrower focus than we wanted (e.g., praise-appella only), while others had a stale playlist that never changed.
When streaming services like Pandora and Spotify came along, we thought they were the answer. But no. None of them categorized a cappella as a characteristic, so when they went to ‘suggest’ tunes, there would inevitably be that moment where some synth, hi-hat, or guitar would come clomping in. That’s no good. (Well, it might be good, but it wasn’t what we were looking for.)

So Acaville was born. Our hope is to bring you a range of contemporary a cappella, from groups and solo artists at all levels and ages. And if you have music you’d like us to play, send it our way!

Allison emailed Soundwaves on behalf of her homeschool group's choir.

"My name is Allison, and we've been referencing your page for good singing resources. Just wanted to send a big thanks from all of us!
My daughter, Lindsay, also found a singing webpage that she thought we might find helpful."

Thank you Allison and Lindsay. The web page you referenced has a great deal of good singing info. The segment on the aging voice is very pertinant to our chorus and most probably to all singers.
